Every week I review websites for clients — and every week I see the same five mistakes over and over again. These aren't design sins or brand inconsistencies. They're foundational elements that separate a website that works from one that just exists.
Here are the five must-haves for your website right now.
1. A Clear Value Proposition Above the Fold
Visitors decide within seconds whether they're in the right place. Your homepage hero needs to answer three questions immediately:
- Who do you serve?
- What problem do you solve?
- Why should they trust you?
A clever tagline is not a value proposition. "We help mid-market B2B companies generate more qualified pipeline through content-led demand generation" — that's a value proposition.
2. Social Proof in Multiple Formats
People don't trust companies. They trust other people. Your website needs social proof at every stage of the buyer journey:
- Testimonials from real clients with specific outcomes
- Case studies that walk through a before/after
- Logos of recognizable clients or partners
- Numbers — "trained over 200 enterprise teams" beats "we have experience"
And critically: put social proof on every major page, not just a dedicated testimonials page that nobody visits.
3. A Friction-Free Path to Contact
If a prospect wants to reach you and can't figure out how in 10 seconds, they leave. Make your contact information impossible to miss:
- Phone number in the header
- Contact form that actually works (test it monthly)
- Response time expectation set ("We respond within 1 business day")
- Multiple contact options for different personalities (form, email, phone, calendar link)
4. Content That Answers Real Questions
Google's goal is to send users to pages that best answer their question. Your content strategy needs to map to the actual questions your prospects are searching for — not the questions you wish they'd ask.
Tools like Google Search Console, SEMrush, and AnswerThePublic show you exactly what your audience wants to know. Build content around those queries, and you're building a pipeline, not a brochure.
5. Site Speed and Mobile Performance
In 2024, slow is broken. Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor, and more importantly: users bounce immediately from slow sites.
Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights right now. If you're scoring below 70 on mobile, you have a serious problem. The fixes are usually straightforward:
- Compress and properly size images
- Remove unused JavaScript and CSS
- Enable caching
- Upgrade your hosting if needed
These five elements won't guarantee you'll rank #1 or close every deal — but without them, no amount of SEO or paid ads will overcome the leak in your funnel. Fix the foundation first, then layer on the traffic.
